The Ultimate Men’s Style Rules To Follow On a Hot Summer Day
It may be hot, but that doesn’t mean it’s OK for you to wear flip-flops anywhere other than at the beach (and even then…). So here, to help you ensure you don’t make any high-summer mistakes during these hot days, we reveal the ten sartorial rules you need to be following right now
The solution to getting it right in the warm weather is to keep it as simple as possible. Roomy shirts and shorts are easy to get away with when you’re working from home.
. Pay attention to fabrics
A simple but important one, this. Wear the wrong fabrics in the heat and you’ll not only run the risk of getting unsightly sweat patches, but you’ll look unnecessarily uncomfortable all day long. Silk-linen mixes, poplin cottons and open-weave pique fabrics are your best bet here. In fact, anything even remotely breathable will be your best friend. It’s important to pay attention to cut too, so opt for roomy styles that will encourage air to flow around areas more prone to sweating. This linen shirt from Riley Studio will work wonders.
. Invest proper money in proper sunglasses
The crowning glory of any warm-weather outfit, a good pair of sunglasses will have the power to make or, indeed, rapidly break your look. The key, therefore, is to not only spend money on a quality pair that will enhance everything else you’re wearing, but to also choose some that will go with all the summer gear you own. If you tend to sport beiges, blues and greys then opt for a pair of glasses in tortoiseshell. If you prefer primary hues or monochromatic shades, go for black. Cheap sunglasses that don’t go with your look will make your outfit look cheap in turn.
. And, for the first time, shorts
The worrying reality is that the world is getting warmer. It’s a fact that means you need to start making investments in key summer pieces rather than just knee-jerk purchases the moment the weather gets hot. A good place to start is with shorts. Get yourself a couple of high-quality shorts you really enjoy wearing and feel great in, because the chances are you’ll be sporting them much more than usual in the coming months.
. Flip-flops still aren’t acceptable
They weren’t acceptable before lockdown and they’re not acceptable now. I would suggest you incinerate them if that wouldn’t be so bad for the environment. Keep them for the gym showers instead. You can never go wrong with a good pair of Birkenstocks.
. Use a non-white-mark deodorant
Simple, but effective – nothing will ruin your new sexy summer shirt more quickly than a load of white, powdery streaks plastered across the front of it. A good deodorant needn’t be expensive, but it needs to be effective.
. Consider your feet
I’ve been running a lot during lockdown and it’s a rediscovered hobby that has been wreaking merry havoc on my feet. The true extent of the damage only came to light when I recently attended a (socially distanced) picnic with some friends and they all, rather rudely, commented on the state of my beaten-up hooves.
The lesson? If you don’t plan on wearing socks, ensure you give your feet a good once-over before heading outside.
