The 2024 Met Gala Theme Has Officially Been Announced 

What is the Met Gala?
The Met Gala is an annual charity fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Led by Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, the benefit takes place in New York City, but designers and celebrities from all over the world fly in to attend. The attendees create and wear elaborate designs dedicated to the special theme of the new display in the museum, selected by Wintour herself.

What is the Met Gala 2024 theme?
The Met Gala 2024 theme is Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. According to the Met’s press release, the new exhibition will focus on using research, conversation, and technology to replicate the sensations of the museum’s major pieces.

Though the theme at first seems a little abstract by contrast to the more literal recent ones, its natural inspirations will allow attendees to not only embrace the beauty of nature but also no doubt nod to it in their looks’ sustainable credentials.

The aim is “breathing new life into these storied objects through creative and immersive activations designed to convey the smells, sounds, textures, and motions of garments that can no longer directly interact with the body.” To honor that, this year’s show “will explore notions of rebirth and renewal, using nature as a metaphor for the impermanence of fashion.”

Nearly 250 items will also be drawn from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection, featuring designs from Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, and Givenchy to span 400 years of fashion history.

“This innovative show will push the boundaries of our imagination and invite us to experience many facets of a work, to learn more about its history, and, ultimately, to gain a deeper appreciation of its beauty,” said Max Hollein, the Met’s Marina Kellen French director and CEO.

When is the 2024 Met Gala?

One consistency in life is that the Met Gala will always land on the first Monday in May, and next year will be no different. The 2024 event will take place on Monday, May 6th.
