2013 has really been such an interesting year for fashion . We have embraced quite a number of trends. It’s sad that no Ugandan designers made a mark and recorded any style trends. We wish to have local designers set trends for Kampala people come 2014.
Here are some of the trends that made a huge mark on the style scene this year. We tell you if you should carry them forward to 2014 as well.
1. Sweat shirts
It was a styling idea that ignited the trend. Sweat shirts were in the past tailored for the gym and indoors while doing chores but designers decided to take them to the fore front. Every stylish girl has been wearing them. They might not be very suitable for Kampala’s weather but we still love them.
2. Furkenstocks
I first saw these things while I was flipping through a magazine. A model was rocking them in a print ad campaign for Celine. Obviously I was baffled by the idea of over sized fur flip flops taking over high fashion. Before I even found out what they are called, Miley Cyrus was wearing them. She has become a style icon – We have nothing else to do but follow suit. I still don’t think they are a good idea though.
3. Drop-crotch pants
From harem pants to drop crotch pants. Where are we headed? They’ve created a lot of buzz on the style scene people having mixed opinions towards them. Justin Bieber made it a point to annoy while clad in them. Unless you are Khalifa Aganaga, you just have to stay away.
4. Wedge Sneakers
What can I say? They are upon us and so we have to embrace. I don’t own a pair so I won’t tell if they are comfortable or not. What is true though is the fact that many celebrities have been wearing them this year. We recommend them for 2014.
5. Bleached eyebrows
One might anoint this a ‘Lady Gaga Trend’ which is very true. However designers picked this bizarre idea and took it to the runway. Models descended on the runway donning blonde eyebrows. Shortly after that stars such as Nicki Minaj were rocking them too. The rest was just history. I however don’t think this is a good idea for Kampala women OR MEN!!. Please leave this one to G-Snake and Margla.
6. Chunky heeled shoes
This is has been my favorite trend this year. However much I love to hate it – it is still the best shoe every trendy woman is wearing right now. From Fendi to Michael Kors, all designers were switching from the pointed stiletto heel to the chunky flat heel. This heel has so many health advantages and stars such as Irene Ntale understand them. We definitely want to see more of them in 2014.
7. Cut out dresses
Everyone loved these dresses. They made us forget those Herve Ledger bandage dresses everyone was wearing. We would love to see more of cut out dresses in 2014.
