Does posing in front of the camera feel like a chore for you, but seems to come really easily to others? You are not alone.
According to a Dove Global research, 69 percent of all American women feel self-conscious in front of the camera. The study goes ahead to note most that posing for a picture or sharing it gives causes more anxiety than public speaking.
“It is, however, possible to get over this camera shyness, says Pearl Mirembe, a photographer whose profile includes a photo series is dedicated to body positivity and making women feelcomfortable in their skin. (Peep it here) In this article, she and other ‘pros’ shared a number of tips to guide you on your way to ‘picture perfection’.
1. Ease up
“I know it sounds basic, but relax. You can put a lot of pressure on yourself to get the perfect picture, that you just end up looking stressed,’ photographer,” Mirembe advises. Stand or sit comfortably, keeping your posture natural. Avoid stiffness and keep your shoulders relaxed.
2. Pose for a good photographer
Be sure to choose a photographer you’re comfortable with, be it for professional photography, or for a few quick pics for your Instagram. Fashion model, Phoebe Achen, who has walked in multiple shows, including the Shebang fashion show, and worked with photographers such as William Kane and Peabo, says, “Posing is made much easier if it’s someone you’re comfortable with taking the pictures.”
3. Highlight your best features
“Pointing your limbs creates angles that add depth to the picture,” says Achen. Experiment with these different angles. Slight tilts of your head or body can add visual interest and highlight your best features.
4. Smiling is always does the trick
Whether it’s a genuine smile, a thoughtful expression, or a playful look, let your emotions shine through. Your face tells a story.
Pro tip from Achen – “ a fake laugh is better than no smile at all.”
5. Use tech tools
“ An app called Lense Buddyis my secret,” say Michelle Mbatudde, a beauty influencer with almost 9k followers on Instagram.“ It comes in handy if you’re too shy to take pictures in front of someone else, or you don’t have someone to take your pictures. This is what most influencers use.”

6. Be confident
The most important tip – exude confidence. Whether you’re posing for a professional shoot or a casual selfie, confidence enhances any pose. If you can’t find the confidence, fake it.
7. Consult you Photographer for ideas
Mirembe usually researches before going in for a shoot. “Whether you’re a pro or not, don’t be hesitant to take tips from a photographer,” she advises. Photographers have a better idea of what works and what doesn’t, so you’re definitely better off listening to them.
8. Keep your eyes open
I know you’ve gotten pictures back before when your eyes are caught in that awkward position between being closed and open. To avoid this, try not to blink as you get your pictures taken.
9. Good posture is key
Be sure to stay upright, and not slouch. Good posture also communicates confidence.
10. Have fun
Don’t forget to have fun! “You having fun will reflect in the pictures. Play some music, invite a cheerleader—maybe a friend, a partner onto the set,” says Mirembe. Getting your pictures taken should be fun, and not stress-inducing.
11. Practice
Practice! “Practice makes perfect. This will help you learn and know your angles, and that’s very important,” Mbatudde advises.
