Hot off the hype from his latest album, KIWANUKA, singer Michael Kiwanuka was recently awarded with the 2020 Mercury Prize for his poetic third album, beating artists like Stormzy and Dua Lipa.
Born in the United Kingdom to Ugandan parents fleeing the Amin regime, he chose to continue going by his full name even when it would be easier on his potential audience if he had a pseudonym. “I won’t change my name, no matter what they call me,” sings Michael Kiwanuka on his latest single, Hero.
“Michael Kiwa-nin-nin-nooko, Michael Keena-wooka, Michael Kawaski… Anything other than Michael Kiwanuka,” he told the BBC. With 4 awards under his belt and up tp 19 different nominations over the span of his career, clearly there’s no stopping this soulful man!
