Rihanna for Vogue March 2014
The secret to Rihanna‘s style is men. Well, not men, but menswear. For her third American Vogue cover, RiRi takes the glossy’s Plum Sykes for a grand tour of New York City shopping, styling, and all things Rihanna. It’s one of those interviews that, although it aims to dissolve the mystified air around one of the world’s biggest stars, only adds more to the enigmatic pot.
Though, it does shed light on her sartorial musings. For one, Rihanna, the “S&M” singer, doesn’t mind pain. “It’s not about pain,” she says referring to her penchant for 4″ heels. “It’s about the commitment. I say to myself, ‘I want to look like this,’ and worry about the pain later.” Looking like “this” consists of “bad b*tch” style, a man’s jacket, and fake jewelry. “My jewelry’s all fake — from Claire’s. Or I get it from my mom’s boutique in Barbados,” she confesses.
According to Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing, Rihanna is the new “Super Woman.” Her jackets, then, are her capes: “It gives you an attitude. It makes a gown look cool.” For Rihanna, that may be true, but for everyone else — including Vogue‘s Sykes — it might not be the case. But, hey, one of the RiRi rules of style is to take risks, and this cover story offers plenty of options; bras optional with ’em all.
“I don’t go out of my way to be a rebel or to have that perception, but a lot of the decisions I make, a lot of the direction I want to move, is against the grain, or against society’s tight lane, and I’m aware of that sometimes. It might not be fitting with the norm, but that’s OK for me.”
