[The return of Roast & Rhyme, the quarterly event organized by Swangz Avenue bringing the flavour of music and meats together, was billed to herald the return of music festivals after the two-year-lockdown. Indeed, the team at Swangz Avenue played to their usual rhythm and didn’t disappoint yesterday during the 14th edition of the event. The Bell Lager-sponsored-music festival was packed by 6pm and traffic lines were still building up as late as 8pm.
Security
Given the recent health and security risks in the country, organizers didn’t take any chances. Military police was deployed from Munyonyo round-about all the way to the venue. At Jahazi Pier, the venue, no incidents of theft or violence were reported.
Performers
Roast & Rhyme performers are not disclosed until 48 hours to the show and when the line-up was released last Friday, a few skeptics questioned the choice of performers. The highlight of the night was Swangz Avenue’s Vinka who put up a very powerful live performance that reminded us of how she has grown musically. Black Roots Band never disappoints with their authentic reggae. Other performers included Mudra, Elijah Kitaka and Ziza Bafana.
Johnnie Walker After Party
The Roast & Rhyme After-party is slowly becoming another big hit. Organizers didn’t anticipate the huge turn-up it got and had to close entry gates at some point. This, however, didn’t stop Selector Jay and DJ Alisha from keeping the crowd dancing till 3am in the morning.
