The 5th edition of Kampala Fashion Week kicked off last evening at the picturesque Kampala Railway Station on Nasser road, with the finale of The Seed Project. Constructed in the 1890’s Kampala Railway Station was an economically strong and strategic achievement for Uganda’s infrastructure.
“When we were generating ideas for this landmark edition our team nostalgically reflected upon how far we have come since our first designer showcases in 2014. From holding our first KFW at a former airport to our third edition taking place at an industrial warehouse – we have never been afraid to undertake a creative challenge,” the team behind the landmark event shared in a press release.
This year’s edition, as with all the four previous editions, the event kicked off with an invite only SEED Project Showcase (Skilled Expressive Entrepreneurial Designers) supporting fashion entrepreneurship by the US Mission. Since its launch in 2014, the SEED PROJECT has been considered a true supporter for young Ugandan design talents. Winners have gone on to make promising design brands; 2014 winner Aggrey Shuba of Shuba Wear showcased at New York Fashion Week this month, 2015 winner, Olivia Nanfuka of NFKA has been invited to present at the annual UNAA Convention and 2015 winner, Semanda Charles Brown, is set to present his SS19 collection tomorrow.
“The success of the SEED PROJECT continues to grow, and this year, was a resounding success, with many applications from across the country from where 12 designers were selected by fashion industry experts,” the Seed Project team shared in a statement. Each designer presented a look inspired by ‘lightness and darkness’. A panel of judges which included Laurie De Jong, Hellen Jennings, Leanne Tihahoa and Banji Bagwana made their choice after a thunderous showcase.
Ssonko Brian was then announced winner of the 2018 edition of the project.
Kampala Fashion Week has yet again partnered with LDJ Productions, over 22 designers are set to showcase over the next two days, starting this evening.
