Music Video Review
Phiona Kyamaziima of Charma Couture On Styling Kataleya & Kandle’s ‘Do Me’ Music Video
Kataleya & Kandle’s ‘Do Me’ music video opens with the duo, posing in green and pink looks respectively, launching a fashion spectacle. Fashion surely has a way of working its charm, the song has, by publication of this story, raked in over 590k views on Youtube. This, of course, doesn’t include the generous airplay its getting on TV.
We have Aaronaire Pictures to thank, but there’s also someone who deserves a pat on the back – Phiona Kyamaziima, the stylist. We had a chat with her and she had so much to say about her work and Kataleya & Kandle.
Kyamaziima, who is also known as ‘Charma’, says that she ventured into fashion out of passion. “I’m a certified public accountant,” she offers.
What’s Charma Couture?
Charma Couture is a brand that we have been trying to build for a minute. We majorly do bespoke, meeting clients’ needs guided by what fits and body type, and picking inspiration from culture. We consider different things depending on what a client desires.
What was your experience creating looks for the “Do Me” video?
First and foremost, I was working with Aaronaire, who is a video director, and he came up with a mood board (different feels of a video) and explained to me what he expected from me as a fashion designer in terms of outfits and the look and feel. I had done their previous video titled “TONAFUYA”, so I kind of had a feel of who they were, what they were comfortable with, and their signature colors, which are are pink and green. So I definitely knew who I was working with and I was working with one of the best music directors, Aaronaire.
We had all these outfits well thought out. It was an exciting experience to be honest. It was exciting and I loved every bit of it. When you know your client; their feelings and what they like and are comfortable with, it definitely becomes easier.
Take us through, look by look, and what they each signified.
One thing is that the green and pink looks are actually their signature looks. The concept of the design of the shoes was inspired by Mad Max.
The shimmery looks against a shiny background were brought in to mirror a stage performance setting. Aaronaire shared his vision that he wanted to see them to appear like they were performing on stage with too many lights… and I was like okay. What could pull that off best? LED lights. We had this pulled off very well, or at least I hope we did.
This is not the first time you have worked with Kataleya and Kandle. What’s your relationship with them?
This is not my first time working with the duo; I first collaborated with them on the “TONAFUYA” project, which was a success too. My relationship with them, right now, can be described as “friends,” but I was primarily contracted to work with them by Theron Music, their management team. They contacted me and I told them I would take up the job. I shared a few ideas, which they loved. I must say they are a very good management company to work with, very professional and pay well. I guess that’s why I always give them my best.
How do you feel when a video you styled is ruling the airwaves?
It’s very beautiful and exciting. It’s a very big achievement for me and very fulfilling too. Whenever the video plays, I have to pause and watch for a bit. I can’t help but marvel at the colours and smartness of the girls. I also take time to observe other people’s thoughts and comments. “Do you mean these costumes were made from here?” they always wallow in wonderment. It’s very fulfilling and feels so good.
I would also like to thank Theron Management for definitely giving me the opportunity to showcase my work. I mean, I have done a lot of work like that before, but they did give me the opportunity to showcase and put it out there. I am really grateful and blessed.
