Monalisa Mutoni, the founder of Mona Faces, is celebrating 10 years in the beauty industry—a journey marked by dedication, creativity, and remarkable success. What started as a single studio has blossomed into a thriving business with two makeup studios, a line of makeup tools, and an educational initiative, the Mona Makeup Masterclass, where she trains aspiring makeup artists in her craft. With her mastery of makeup and deep love for the industry, Mona has proven herself as a driving force in Uganda’s beauty scene.
In an exclusive chat with us for our March 2024 cover shoot, which celebrates the women in Uganda’s beauty industry making waves, Mona shared some insights from her incredible career.

“From Early Mornings to Relaxing Weekends: The Evolution of My Journey”
Reflecting on the early days of her career, Mona recalls the relentless hustle that shaped her path. “I remember starting at 5:00 AM on a Friday morning with brides, going to the studios, doing back-to-back walk-ins that sometimes stretched until 2:00 AM,” she reminisces. “Then, I had to start the next day at 4:00 AM, with only 2 to 3 hours of sleep, and that’s what sticks with me.”
Though those long nights were tough, Mona has found comfort in how far she’s come. “Now, we have a team, and none of the team members have to work long hours like I had to. It’s just growth, and it’s beautiful.”
The Heart Behind Mona Faces: Passion and Authenticity
Mona’s business is built on her deep passion for beauty and her personal values. “I’m the kind of person who will only do something if I am passionate about it, and that explains my love for beauty and why I chose this as a career path,” she says. For her, quality is non-negotiable. “Our penchant for quality services comes from who I am as a person, the things that I love, and everything that I do.”
Her approach is as genuine as it is successful. “Everything just happens naturally; it was all flowing together; the products and services that we provide are the services I would want or expect to receive from any business.”
