Thebe Magugu is a South African contemporary women’s brand. The brand constantly seeks new ways of presenting women with clothing that both complies with and enhances them every day.
Born and raised in a rural outskirt in Northern Cape and now residing in Johannesburg, Thebe’s entire life has been heavily informed by the local people and places around him. As a designer he has delved deep into the meaning of his home’s cultural traditions.
The collections, Gender Studies SS18 and Home Economics AW18, Thebe explored the condition of the female force in South Africa. “We are constantly surrounded by women, and on a personal level, the trait I have always found most admirable is their powerful ability to possess both Strength and Vulnerability.” he explains. He has won several awards including the overall award for curation and fashion content at the International Fashion Showcase for 2019 and recently qualified as a finalist for the prestigious and highly coveted 2019 LVMH Prize.
He made a powerful and insightful statement regarding the prize saying, “The historic lack of African representation within Western fashion has less to do with an absence of talent on the continent, and more to do with the tendency for people living outside of Africa to not appreciate or consider African fashion, beyond the scope of traditional African printed designs that have come to define the industry.”
With his sleek, forward-looking designs, this designer is set to go far in the industry.
