Rachel Sanyu Tumusiime is a fashion designer and seamstress behind #sewyourstyle. She makes bespoke gowns and African inspired clothing for any situation, and hers is a story that inspires us to stick to the vision no matter what.
After studying Industrial Art at Makerere majoring in fashion design, she worked with Diane Komunda CEO of Everafter Fashion House. That is how she learnt most things about drafting and sewing. In her third year her big sister and father bought her a machine that she used to make outfits for family and friends. That is how she got started practicing the art.
She is inspired by African style a lot and likes to mix it with couture style to make it more contemporary. With every new order she makes she challenges herself to get better because for her, fashion is her passion, it inspires her to be better.
The thing that is so striking is that the 27 year old is full-time dedicated to her clothes and makes a living off fashion. Although it’s currently a one person team, she looks to grow it in the future to include more people because as you can imagine, it can get tiresome. But the passion burns brighter than any pressures she could be facing, “When I wake up in the morning I don’t feel like I am going to work, just going to do something I love.”
Her dreams are big, which include opening a fashion school to help spread the skill to other aspiring designers who are underprivileged. She also sees SewYourStyle as being a big brand not only in East Africa, but spreading out all over Africa and eventually the world, “I want to see my designs one day on those red carpets; Oscars, Grammy’s…”
She has been nominated for Outstanding Fashion designer at the Uganda Entertainment Awards as well as dressed people like reknown Zambian Gospel artist Pompi.
She is located around Impala House near Christ The King. You Can Also find her on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Here are more of her creations. Leave a comment and let us know what you think of her work, love it? Or not…
