The May 2024 Issue

Meet the 9 Rising Stars of Ugandan Cinema

By  |

There’s no doubt that Uganda’s film industry is experiencing its ‘star moment’. With media platforms like DSTV commissioning new productions annually, glamorous awards ceremonies like the IKon Awards celebrating talent, and an audience that’s finally appreciating our stories, it’s an exciting time to be an actor.

Cleopatra Koheirwe, one of Uganda’s leading actors, whose resume includes ‘The Last King of Scotland’ and Pearl Magic Prime’s ‘Prestige’, couldn’t agree more. “We’ve come such a long way, and there’s finally a sense of success and triumph because now, you can earn a living doing this,” she says. “However, there’s still a long way to go because systems are not yet fully aligned. I believe it’s the younger generation that will navigate this more smoothly.”

Indeed, the new wave of young actors and filmmakers are benefiting from the advancements in technology and the trailblazing set by veterans like Cleopatra. When asked about what makes a good film in 2024, Cleopatra emphasizes the importance of a compelling story. “It always starts with a good story. That’s what attracts good actors, producers, directors, and even the audience,” she explains.

For our May 2024 cover story, we had a conversation with nine dynamic talents poised to shape the future of Uganda’s burgeoning film industry.
