Mother's Day
Lessons of Love: Maureen Nantume and Daughter Nakitende Whitney’s Story
Arguably, every mother dreams of countless ‘mini-me’ moments with her daughter. For singer Maureen Nantume, this dream has become a reality, as her daughter, Nakitende Whitney, is always available to bring joy to her mother. “I cannot even explain what it feels like to have someone who is yours, not your friend, not your sibling, but your own,” Maureen tells Satisfashion UG. “There’s always something wonderful about being a mother. It’s very interesting. Being a mother is a good thing.”
Reflecting on her favorite memory with Whitney, she recalls, “I remember one time she was going to school, and this time I gave her a little more money than usual, expecting to get some change. The next day came, and I told her, ‘I assume I won’t give you more money because I gave you money yesterday.’ She said it’s all gone. How? She said, ‘We ate a lot yesterday.’ That made me laugh because apparently they usually eat, yes, but this time she and her friends bought enough things to fill up the table. I didn’t get mad; I just laughed at the idea of them getting excited and spending big.”
While Whitney and her siblings have grown up with privilege, Maureen’s childhood was filled with challenges and strife. “My own life wasn’t easy, so I have strived to teach my children that life comes with ups and downs,” she shares. “Today I’m here, tomorrow I might not be. Just because I’m here, they will go to school in a car, but there are kids who do not have that privilege – I remind them to persevere and prepare for anything.”
When asked about the biggest lesson she has learned from her mother, Whitney says it is the fear of God. “The one thing Mum taught me is to fear God, to put God first in all the things I do in life.”
Maureen’s dream is to watch her daughter thrive and succeed in whatever she pursues. “I never want to see her fail, so all the prayers I have are for her to succeed. Where I didn’t reach, I want to see my children reach. This is why I took them to the best schools. I want to see her enjoy life, drive nice cars, travel, etc.”
