Kabuye Ronald to revolutionize Uganda’s fashion industry with “Who are you wearing?”

Urban TV’s new show ‘Live on the Red carpet‘ is set to change the way celebrities dress on the red carpet. Kabuye Ronald who hosts the show thinks that with this four word question “Who are you wearing?“, the show is creating a platform for local designers to get their names out there. Just like E! Live on the Red carpet which is watched by millions of viewers  all over world, Ronald’s show covers red carpet events asking celebrities what and who they are wearing. The show also features the ‘mani cam’ where female celebrities walk their fingers in front of a camera to show off their manicure.

Who are you wearing?” was first used by the late comedienne Joan Rivers during the 1995 Oscars. The question was coined to create a conversation with celebrities on the red carpet since that’s what the magazines were going to write about after the event. The question ended up inadvertently revolutionizing the fashion business with designers running after celebrities to dress them for red carpet events. The question is now used by all red carpet hosts all over the world.

Lupita Nyongo is one of the star’s whose celebrity status and stardom shot to the roof thanks to her great fashion on the red carpet. Ronald is of the view that the fashion industry in Uganda will not be the same again if designers tap into this phenomenon. “It is already working for stylists and designers in Nigeria,”  he adds having been one of the Red Carpet hosts at the 2015 Africa Magic Movie Awards in Lagos early this year.

Who are you wearing?” has however had its fair of criticism and backlash. Celebrities such as Julianne Moore and Jennifer Aniston have over the years refused to parade their fingers in front of a camera to show off their manicure. Julianne who covered the May 2015 issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine told the magazine that she was offended when a red carpet host once asked her to pull up her dress to show off her shoes.   Comedian Amy Poehler was so fed up of hearing “Who are you wearing?” that she teamed up with The Representation Project to promote their online campaign to #AskHerMore. Poehler’s Smart Girls Community sent a tweet eliciting questions that focused more on an actress’ talent than her taste in clothing.
