Jumia partners with Barclays to introduce card-on-delivery payments

We want to enable our customers to opt for safer payment options when receiving a delivery from us!

Jumia, Uganda’s largest online shopping mall, has partnered with Barclays to introduce the card-on-delivery payment option for customers in Kampala. In an effort to heighten the convenience of shopping online and to increase card usage amongst Ugandans, Jumia customers within Kampala can now order items ranging from electronics and appliances, to fashion and food – and pay using their VISA, MasterCard, American Express or Maestro card at the point of delivery. Jumia’s riders and third party delivery agents now carry a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal to enable card payments on the spot.

Prior to the partnership with Barclays, online shoppers were limited to paying cash on delivery or through MTN Mobile Money. Enabling card-on-delivery payments pushes Uganda one step closer to the possibility of a cashless economy. Jumia’s Marketing Manager, Stacey Mwesezi expressed that “although the thought of Uganda becoming a cashless economy may still seem farfetched, we are well on our way. Ugandans have already embraced Mobile Money. Card payments continue to grow, so it is only right that Jumia make both payment options readily available.”

Mwesezi added that “Jumia encourages the use of electronic payment methods, not only because we are a leading Internet company, but also because it is safer for our customers. Withdrawing and carrying large amounts of cash is risky – we want to enable our customers to opt for safer payment options when receiving a delivery from us.”

In line with Bank of Uganda’s (BoU) plan to reduce the use of paper money in Uganda by 2022, Barclays has reinforced its position as a digital leader by technically facilitating the card-on-delivery payment method for Jumia.

“Barclays is committed to driving financial inclusion and empowering businesses across Africa. Our customers’ needs are ever changing and as they change, we will strive to adopt smart technology solutions that deliver outstanding services. Our partnership with Jumia is evidence of our ambition to deploy safe electronic solutions to the benefit of the entire country,” says Gunilla Ouko, Barclays’ Head of Customer Network.

According to BoU, cash is still the most widely used payment method in Uganda, accounting for 75-85% of retail transactions.
