About the role
Position: Technical Designer
Contract Type: Fixed Term Appointment
Duty station: Kampala, Uganda
Job Profile:
The Technical Designer teaches, mentors, and clearly communicates processes, procedures, and technical skills to the team.
He/ She will be responsible for facilitating the transition of apparel styles from design concept, through to a final, production ready prototype.
The Job holder is responsible for;
- Creating and visualising ideas and producing Msichana designs by hand or using a computer aided design.
- Training community women on modern tailoring and design approaches.
- Monitoring the performance of the community women and promoting teamwork.
- Pattern and prototype creation; including recommending fabric silhouette compatibility that ensures execution of design intent
- Evaluate garment to ensure compliance of spec and construction.
- Strive for continual improvement that drives product and process enhancements
- Identify potential production, quality and costing issues and make recommendations to ensure brand integrity
- Identify and proactively engage supervisor and Business Partners when issues arise
- Collaborate with business partners to gain clear direction and consensus. Ensure size and fit consistency across product categories
- Meet seasonal and production deadlines
- Foster an open communication and team environment with all business partners
- Hold self and others accountable for work commitments and outcomes
- Any other duties as assigned.
Knowledge & Abilities
- Mastery in fit and patterning making – including grading and construction manufacturing methods for multiple product types
- Understanding of physical fit; evaluation of body size, shape and the relationship of clothing on the target body
- Very keen attention to detail and quality control.
- Proven track record of driving results through self and others
- Ability to proactively trouble shoot and problem solve
- Superior organizational skills with ability to multi task
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to inspire and transfer skills
- Computer- savvy – knowledge of or ability to learn to use Computer Aided Design software

Education/ Job Experience
- Qualification: University Degree in Design, Tailoring or other related fields.
- Applicants must possess 2-3 years’ experience as a designer.
- Knowledge of design from a technical perspective is required i.e. producing patterns and technical specifications for designs.
- Good teaching skills.
