Jennifer Musisi: What we wish to see her wearing at the Kampala Festival!

The one person we always look forward to seeing at the Kampala festival is no doubt the Executive Director Jennifer Musisi. She’s obviously the queen of the castle so her appearance is usually one of the main activities of the day. Last year she made a stop at all the tents and I hope she’s going to do the same this year. One of the things that excite us about her appearance is her fashion away from from her office.

Last year she opted for a maxi rainbow skirt,a red top and a hat. This was a very bold move considering that it was during that time when everyone was taking her too seriously. She made her fun side pop in a fashionable way. Personally I expected to see her in a short boring skirt, a KCCA t shirt and cap. You know how school headteachers dress on school parents’ days. This was too fun and loud. Festival fashion is always loud fun and playful.

A lot has happened between last year and now so we expect something different. She’s arguably the most powerful woman in Kampala and so her fashion should evoke power. We have compiled some style ideas for her as we get to the D day.  

The Boho Chic style

From what we have gathered, she loves her floral patterned dresses and skirts. We believe she has a thing with color. With boho she will be able to add some edge to what she already has. All she needs to have is a great deal of accessories ie necklaces, dangling earrings, headbands and all those accessories. She can go for tribal prints for her skirt or dress. If it is a skirt, she can match it with a plain colored top – preferably white.

Maxi dresses seem to be her forte. Bold prints in colors such and orange, magenta and green are the best option

Many local designers such as Renzioni can be able to avail trendy boho items to her.

Feather Power

Feathers are the most used during any carnival. Caribbean events are the best examples. Feathers are used for almost anything from head gear to under wear. In this case we expect her to get an item that will not only make her stand out but look powerful. This jacket by Roksanda Ilincic is the best representation of what I’m talking about. Just looking at it makes you wonder if there is anyone in the world who can wear it.

She can have something tailored with utmost creativity. The center piece are the feathers.Obviously the feathers can be placed anywhere possible. She can match this with gladiator heels in a dark color preferably black. The feathers can be on the shoes, the dress or the skirt but not the on head. I’m quite sure everyone is planning to wear a feather head band on Sunday. Our Executive Director cannot look like everyone. She has to stand out.

Aztec print

The hottest pattern right now is the Aztec. Aztec patterns can come in dresses, skirts, shoes and even accessories. Why not see her draped in the hottest print right now. It’s exotic and extremely trendy. A long dress will not only make her look elegant but also fashion forward. She can add a little twist by having a simple head band to sum it up.

The Rabbit felt fedora hat

Last year she wore a hat so we expect her to choose something else for her head gear. However if she prefers to have a hat on once a gain, let it be huge. These hats took over fashion week with designers such as Saint Laurent showcasing a lot of them. We want her to look fashion forward, have this huge hat on as she waves at us. She can match this hat with any of the outfits above.

These made a mark on the ramp during the previous season at fashion week. It wouldn’t hurt if or Executive Director wears something fresh from the runway.

What we should deduct from this are the few fashion items that will be able to make you stand out at the festival. Festivals are about loosening up. It’s about exuding your individual style. You can steal some of these ideas if you want but we have tailored them for our Executive Director. We expect her to look dashing so better follow suit as well.

The Kampala City Festival is on this Sunday and will the have lots of activities. The KCCA team has booked over 30 local artistes to grace this event. Just incase you don’t get chance to get into any cooperate tent, expect to still have a memorable experience.
