Inside Kampala’s First Bridgerton-themed Soiree With Forking Around Kla & Tanqueray Gin
It’s a Tuesday evening and the city is winding down from the day’s work. The city bustles in the daily mundane chaos, but in the heart of Kampala, a small group of impeccably dressed ladies converge…
Hosted by Lucy Smize and Forking around Kampala, a curated list of guests was invited into a Bridgerton Experience to share each other’s company and a three course meal.
We were surrounded by beauty, opulence and a display of some of Kampala’s most esteemed designers’ work. The soiree was held at a quaint hotel in the currently dusty Bugolobi. With traffic lagging as the fabulous guests floated to the entrance, the outer chaos was left at the door as we strolled into a meticulously adorned space with spring themed flowers at every turn, and subtle nods to the TV show as we went along. The tables were adorned with more flowers and customized place cards for each guest, along with the day’s ‘society paper’ by Lady Whistledown. Cocktails flowed uninhibited, curtesy of Tanqueray gin, and we were in for a time.
The guests were the most fun part of the sight. Each person who walked in was met with ooh’s and ahh’s from other guests, curious about how they interpreted the theme, which for some went more subtle, and others – over the top. Cameras everywhere, and air kisses galore – seeing each person’s personality through their look was interesting to watch. Handheld fans fluttering everywhere, be-gloved hands holding the only item which is undeniably 21st century, their phone, taking photos and videos of everything, it was a moment you couldn’t help but document for later. Everyone looked wonderful, adorned in jewels, fine fabrics and perfectly coifed hair. No single person looked like the last, but everyone was a uniquely stunning sight.
Starters started to float out as we played Bridgerton themed games, starting with a unique take on introductions – ensuring no one left as a stranger – followed by snippets of the new highly anticipated season of Bridgerton. More games were afoot, with the ladies sharing their most memorable quotes from the show, and a little bit of karaoke as the night went on. As the mains came out, we were engrossed in conversation, learning more about each other or talking about the show. By the time the gorgeous floral three tiered cake was cut, it had been a Tuesday well spent.
It was an evening filled with my favourite form of escapism. Diving into a theme so far removed from the regular humdrum of adulting, that one can become Lady for the night, transported into a world full of delicate elegance and beauty for a couple of hours. In attendance were some of fashion’s favourite faces, like Kampala Creme’s Mami Deb, whose betrothed beau made an appearance at the end of the night.
