Renowned Ugandan fashion designer Anita Beryl has officially taken a major step toward marriage after introducing her fiancé, Richard Ekoot, to her family in a colourful and culturally rich Ankole traditional introduction ceremony (kugamba obugyenyi).
The ceremony took place at Beryl’s family home in Masheeruka, Sheema District, bringing together close relatives, elders and friends to witness the couple’s union in line with Ankole customs.
The Couple
Anita Beryl, celebrated for her bold and contemporary African fashion, stayed true to her craft by personally designing outfits for herself and her entourage. The looks were inspired by traditional Kinyankole elements, including endiro and ekyanzi, earning admiration both at the ceremony and online.

Her fiancé, Richard Ekoot, is a financial consultant and the son of the late John Temel from Kumi District. He arrived with his family to formally ask for Beryl’s hand in marriage, marking an important cultural milestone for the couple.

The Ceremony
During the ceremony, Beryl officially presented Ekoot to her parents, Rev. Emmanuel Ahabwe and Jean Ahabwe, asking them to accept him as her future husband. Elders from both families led the traditional proceedings, including introductions and bride-price negotiations.

The atmosphere was filled with joy as it was announced that the bride price had been successfully paid, symbolising the families’ acceptance of the union. Beryl’s father praised Ekoot’s determination and character, while Ekoot’s mother expressed her happiness and promised to embrace Beryl as her own daughter.
A Grand Gesture
In a moment that caught the attention of many, Ekoot surprised his bride-to-be with a pink Range Rover, which he left parked at the gate as a gift — adding a touch of modern luxury to the deeply traditional celebration.

The introduction ceremony marked the beginning of Anita Beryl and Richard Ekoot’s journey toward marriage, blending culture, love and personal style — a fitting reflection of the designer’s identity and the couple’s shared future.
