How To Pose For Photos Like An Instagram Influencer

By  |

Being an influencer is fun, we want to believe. What else can we do, when influencers are the social butterflies that make our experience on social media worthwhile? These special beings, who are probably modelled from pieces of perfection fill our feeds with a constant stream of gloriously stylish photos. Their photos end up receiving a generous number of likes and comments, making the rest of us feel quite ‘anti-social’.

However, racking up those numbers, following and influence is not a walk in the park. These stunning ladies (and a few men) follow a pattern with just a select poses and techniques that we ordinary people don’t know. So, I’m here to help us share these tips. You never know, one of us might become popular and represent us in the elite club of ‘Instagram influencers’.

Don’t smile.

Rule number one, don’t smile. In fact, make an effort to never smile again in your life. I honestly don’t understand why they hate to smile, but it seems followers respond more to photos where the smile is absent. Flip through Bettinah’s feed and you’ll count the number of times she smiled. Imagine you’re looking at your worst enemy, then pose for the camera. Boom, perfect shot!

Never post a photo taken by your phone

This is an unwritten rule. It’s the reason why Lydia Jazmine is a fashion favourite yet Fille is not. She never posts photos taken with her phone, unless it’s a Camon11Pro. Your photos should only be taken by a professional photographer. And not just any photographer, an ‘Instagram famous’ professional photographer like Daville or Manzi Rolland. The idea is to look as perfect as possible, something your low quality phone can’t achieve.

Go to a fancy hotel

A hotel room maybe? Or an outdoor setting with lush gardens in the background. How do these girls get access to fancy hotel rooms and exotic venues almost daily? Well, I have no answer. That’s why being an Instagram influencer is not for the faint of heart (read broke)!

Can’t find a fancy hotel? There’s a spot where every Instagram star takes their photos from. I don’t know where it is, but be the judge

Again

Even TK Berriez is often there

Taking cues from each other is no evil afterall

Post plain images

This is the most depressing thing ever. Someone posts a photo with nothing in it, not even a caption attached only to get a sizeable number of likes and comments. We ordinary people, you share a photo of you and your cat accompanied with a fancy caption fetched off google, only to get a modest 2 likes and no comment.

Let’s get into the poses

Barbie feet – Stand on your toes (or point them) to elongate your legs in the shot. This also automatically fixes the posture as you struggle to find balance. Simply put, just pretend you’re wearing an invisible pair of high heels!

In motion – The goal here is to make it seem like you’re casually taking a stroll. Except you’re really not. Put one foot forward as if you’re taking a step, and then pause while your photo is taken. Find a fancy road, not that dusty road opposite your home.

Man spread – The act of man spreading involves sitting with both legs wide apart and it is anything but ladylike. Rihanna and Cate Ayellah are huge fans of this one.

One foot forward – Rest your weight on one leg while leaning back slightly and put the other foot forward. This elongates your body

The Spice Diana squat – There are 32 reasons to love this pose. Make sure you’re wearing a fancy pair of shoes before you go ahead to squat.

Armpit air-out –What do you even do with your awkward arms? The ‘Instagram influencer’ approved solution for instant chicness is to either stick one (or both) arms up behind or above the head.

Vanity mirror close-up shot – Just after you’re done with your makeup, pose for a photo in front of the vanity mirror. Make sure this is an A-list makeup artist’s studio, otherwise it might end up into a disaster.

Sit in an office and pretend to read something – This is another perfect one. Call up one of your friends whose office you can utilize without causing trouble. Sit and pretend to read something.
