I started wearing glasses at the age of seven (because of my terrible low vision). Over the years, my eyesight has gotten better and lenses smaller but the frames have remained ugly, mostly because, for long I’ve not been getting the opportunity to choose my frames.
In this article, I would like to delve into something that’s close to my heart, and I guess many of you out there. Truth is glasses can be a hot accessory, whether you’re wearing them because of your eyesight or for fashion. It is important to take note of a number of factors such as your face shape before you pick them.
First things first… identify your face shape
The right frames to wear greatly depend on the shape of your face. A frame may look good on you but look terrible on me simply because we have different face shapes.
There are four major types of face shapes (although some people break them down to eight) and they are:
Then what…
Your face shape will determine what glasses are best for you. The goal is to contradict your face shape as shown below.
Round face:
If you have a round face, look for more structured frames with sharper edges in order to add a little bit of structure to your face.
Square/ rectangular:
Your face is very structured. So, you will choose frames that are more rounded or that have softer edges in order to make your face look a little less structured.
Diamond/ heart shape:
If your face is diamond/ heart-shaped, you can get away with pretty much anything since your face has characteristic of both the round and square face shapes.
Oval:
Your face is very well balanced. So your goal is to maintain the natural shape of the face. You need symmetrical glasses that are neither too structured nor too rounded to maintain a natural balance.
Now what…
Your next goal is to choose the best color and size.
For color…
First things first; you need to know your tone which could either be warm, cool or neutral.
I am currently in the process of writing an article on how to identify your skin tone. Feel free to check it out when we share it. Basically, your eyeglasses should either contrast your shade with a lighter or darker shade or should complement your undertone with a more saturated hue.
For size…
Sunglasses tend to be larger than eyeglasses, so your sunglasses size will most likely be different than your eyeglasses size. I also personally think you should not care much about the size of your sunglasses but you really need to care when it comes to eyeglasses.
For eyeglasses, just make sure the glasses are at the same level with your eyes. Nothing larger, nothing smaller.
