How to be Happy Even When We Think it is Impossible

There may be many reasons why we believe , at some point , that being happy is not within our reach. Either because the objectives have not been met, because we see other people who seem to be doing better and we compare ourselves, because what we are doing and we thought we liked it does not really fulfill us…

Although you may see the opposite on social networks, the reality is that many people feel the same as you. The good news is that our perception of what happiness is, or what we need to be happy, can be changed with a little work.

Tomorrow it is not that you are going to wake up with a complete change of mentality and suddenly see life in pink, but with some time you can adopt another perspective that allows you to feel satisfied and be happy.

The first thing we should all do to also improve our mental health, and something we had already discussed here at GQ, is not to compare ourselves or our achievements with what we see on social networks.

As psychologist Juliana Breines explains, on the internet people do not show their reality, but rather a perfect version that in most cases does not exist. If the goal we have is what we see there, we will never achieve it because it is impossible and thus we will never be truly happy.

Another thing that the expert highlights is to “regret the loss” of the life that you imagined or wanted and that you have not achieved.

Maybe what happened to you is that you had a dream that ultimately could not be fulfilled, or that did not last as long as you expected, so feeling the loss of that life is normal and also good. It is necessary to go through that grief to be able to recover and have support to be able to take the next step.

Redefining our goals is essential to recover happiness . We haven’t achieved something, but we can go for the next challenge, look for new things, and we may even realize that what we thought we wanted is not really what we needed.

The important thing, as behavioural science expert Kristen Lee recalled, is to understand that there is no such thing as perpetual happiness , that life is full of ups and downs and that even if we encounter bad moments, life in general can be happy.

That is why it is essential, as Breines says, to “savour the good moments”, because those are the ones that will remind us and show that there is happiness in our lives, even in the smallest things.
