As Coronavirus wreaks havoc across the globe, many Ugandans are choosing to social distance, as a protective measure against the spread of the deadly virus. The practice involves restricting movement, avoiding large gatherings, barring friends from visiting, working from home, and basically living in isolation. Uganda has so far registered 18 case of infection, and so no one is taking chances.
We had a chat with Lyn Atwiine, our own editor, on how she’s coping.
How is this social distancing treating you?
It’s actually quite fun. I have a little more time to go back into the things I’ve always loved doing, hobbies I had failed to find time for. The worst part is not being able to see my friends, and maybe trying to get out of bed in the morning is a battle. The rest is smooth sailing.
Do you miss coming to office everyday?
I miss the few to no distractions at work. At home I’m looking at makeup, my warm bed, I start thinking of funky outfit ideas, the TV is on. It’s not easy. Then here are chores to be done. At office I can just zone into work for a good while.
How are you keeping your creative juices flowing?
Music is the best way to escape right now, so I’ll put on a nice playlist and just vibe… Ari Lennox is 80% of what I’m listening to now. Jon Bellion, Precious and The Silent Treatment are also other artists I resort to.
What’s the biggest lesson you are picking from this?
I think I’ve learnt two things. One; life is fragile, one day it can just be flipped upside down and we would have little say on how that happens.
Two; and most importantly, is that a very simple looking solution can make a big difference. Imagine containing the virus by just staying home and doing nothing! If this is the best way to reduce transmission of the virus, why complicate things? I’ll be home without question. Luckily I can afford to.
