Fashion and design is a female dominated industry, but for Carlos Mulindwa, this has always been an opportunity to seize. Starting out as renowned designer Fatumah Asha’s protégé, he is now building a business of his own.
What kind of business do you do?
I am a fashion designer, tailor and dressmaker. My job is to make people feel good about themselves as they look their very best.
What is the name of your business?
My brand name is Carlistah Fashions.
When did you start designing and making clothes?
I’ve been designing and making clothes all my life. However, I started making clothes to sell two years ago.
Why did you pick an interest in fashion?
As a child, I always admired my mother’s sense of style. My dream was to get skills to make clothes for her to wear. I also love challenges and innovating, everything fashion is about. I haven’t been disappointed yet.
Did you study fashion?
I studied fashion and design, and got a certificate in it. At school I specialized in menswear. For the last two years I’ve been receiving mentorship from Fatumah Asha because I’ve always wanted to venture into womenswear because of market demands. Women spend more on fashion than men.
How did you get your first client?
Actually my first client was a friend. He knew I was doing this, and reached out to me make an outfit for him. He’s the one that pushed me to revamp my talent and before I knew it, clients were walking in and calling me to place orders.
Which renowned people/companies have you worked with?
I have worked with Carol Nantongo of Golden band. I have a cultural troupe called Xplosions, I make most of their costumes. I’ve also styled a few celebrities such as Tina Teise and Mwaj Ahmed.
What does it cost to have an outfit made by you?
Charges depend on what you want, the fabrics to be used and the complexities involved. My prices start from 50k and beyond.
What makes a good fashion designer?
Innovation, dedication and honesty. You should also have good communication skills because the job involves a lot of back and forth interaction with clients.
How much do you earn a month?
For now, I earn enough to sustain my needs and the people around me.
What advice would you give someone interested in starting a career in fashion?
First of all, you must fall in love with what you do. It’s important to be passionate about fashion before venturing into it. Then go out and seek training or mentorship. It helps a great deal. Then, like every job, work really hard.
