Beenie Gunter (real names Baguma Crescent), a dancehall artist, and his girlfriend Nicky are enjoying every bit of their relationship. In celebration of Valentine’s day, the couple share their experience together and the lessons therein.
How long have you known each other?
5 years now.
How did you meet?
We met up, and things started from there. I think it was a natural connection because when I was out having fun, I saw something different from what I had been seeing at the time. So my eyes were focused and I had to shoot my shot (laughs).
You have been together for 5 years. How have you managed to make it work?
It’s prayers, man, and God has always been at the forefront of everything. You know, it’s not easy to maintain a relationship, so we put God at the fore front because it’s a public relationship. We are best friends and that’s the first thing, so whatever comes our way, we face it as we always have and have managed with love, everything with love.
How do you celebrate Valentine’s Day?
Every day is Valentine’s Day if you’re in the right relationship. Every day is a chance to love someone better. So every day is Valentine’s Day for us as long as we are awake and grateful to God. Every day I kiss her and tell her I love her all the time. It doesn’t matter if it’s that day or not. Every day has to be Valentine’s. If you’re in love with someone, it is love.
How would you define love?
Love is that strength we can’t control, and it’s divine from God. It is a blessing and a source of strength to be able to control what we cannot control. When it hits you, you feel no pain. You’re gone and taken. To me, love is that supernatural power that wears you and everything changes; your ego and pride, because when you’re in front of someone you love, it’s a different vibe.
