The buzz is subsiding around Nigerian-Cameroonian pop star Dencia and her skin lightening cream Whitenicious. But luckily there’s a new “scandal” giving her cause to get #trending: Lupita Nyong’o and her new Lancôme contract.
Nyong’o was last week announced as the first-ever black spokeswoman for the beauty Goliath, joining all-star cast of spokespeople including Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Penelope Cruz, and Lily Collins. The product she’ll be repping hasn’t been announced yet, but we know what it probably won’t be — one of Lancôme’s face-lightening creams. Those might not be what Lancôme’s equivalent of Great Lash Mascara, but Dencia knows her competitor products.
One such product is Lancôme’s Blanc Expert Night Cream, which apparently boasts “an upgraded formula containing Whiterefirm Technology.”
We’re not sure what’s more shocking — that someone exists who isn’t Team Lupita, or that Dencia actually has a valid point. Lupita is a smart woman who must have done her homework, and saying “no” to Lancôme would have been a tremendously satisfying “fuck you.” But at the same time, Lancôme are one of the most prominent beauty brands in the world, and becoming their first black ambassador is a chance to set new precedent in the beauty industry.
