1. Chanel debuts Pre-fall 23 Collection in Dakar Senegal

Imagined by Virginie Viard and crafted between the CHANEL Ready-to-Wear ateliers in Paris and the Maisons d’art of 𝘭𝘦19M, the 2022/23 Métiers d’art CHANEL – DAKAR collection is the result of multiple meetings over the past three years between Virginie Viard and artists of all backgrounds: the choreographer Dimitri Chamblas who called on Germaine Acogny’s École des Sables dancers, but also directors, musicians and writers, all together with friends of the House.

“For Chanel to choose to present its first-ever show in Africa—and simultaneously the first show to be presented by any European or US house anywhere in Sub-Saharan Africa—was an ambitious move indeed.” said Vogue. At a fittings appointment pre-show, backstage in the Senegalese capital’s former Palais de Justice (now home to its art Biennale), Virginie Viard said that the idea first took hold three years ago. Two years of Covid-enforced hiatus followed, before scouting began. “When we first came to this place, Dakar, it was really incredible, and we knew.” she said.

Directed by Caroline de Maigret.

3. Celine takes over the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles

From the skinny scarves to the soundtrack, there was an unmistakable mid-aughts influence to Celine’s Winter ’23 collection, which Hedi Slimane unveiled in Los Angeles. The runway-meets-concert took place at Koreatown’s 1930-era art deco Wiltern Theater, a landmark intrinsic with music having welcomed no shortage of major stars over the decades.

For ‘Age of Indieness,’ Slimane paid specific attention to the playlist, commissioning and co-producing a track by The White Stripes and welcoming Iggy Pop, Interpol, and The Strokes for a performance post-show. As for the colossal co-ed offering of 87 looks, the Winter ’23 collection featured many of the pieces that have become a runaway success for the brand. Think: embroidered folksy waistcoats, Breton tops, army jackets, and skinny leather pants as well as edgy rock n’ roll-esque suiting and bourgeois ruffled blouses.
