British-Ugandan Actress Sheila Atim Dazzles On Amaka-Zines’ Action Issue
“I feel like there’s a lot of healing happening through films like The Woman King.” – @sheilaatim
African and Black talent in film and TV is on the rise, but for many Black women, progression in the entertainment industry has many pitfalls. Despite the odds Sheila Atim is solidifying her place in this precarious field while simultaneously inspiring generations. The multitalented British-Ugandan actor reflects on her exploratory career journey – from school plays to big screens across the world.
Amaka had this to say about the new issue featuring Sheila Atim:
“Our highly anticipated 2023 AMAKA-Zine is finally here and we are so excited to share it with you!
This year’s edition spotlights African film and TV, exploring the social, cultural and historical insights currently surrounding the industry. We’ve dedicated this issue to the women who have navigated the creative industry to make a name for themselves, and who have paved the way for future opportunities for African and Black women.
We are honored to feature an exclusive interview and stunning photoshoot with The Woman King star, Sheila Atim. Additionally, we unpack sexism within the industry, why African women need better representation behind the camera and the critical importance of amplifying our voices and telling our stories. From Egypt to South Africa, we showcase the women who are pioneers in the world of film, television and theatre. Without further ado, we present our second AMAKA-Zine issue, The Action! Issue.”
