The Golf Course Hotel ballroom was transformed into a sanctuary of high fashion on Saturday, September 16, 2023, as the annual Satis-Fashion Show returned with a resounding statement of African luxury. Amidst a lineup of regional heavyweights, Nigerian-born creative visionary Bright Urhobo stole the spotlight, unveiling his latest masterpiece: the “Afro Dot Collection” under his acclaimed label, Ranto Clothings.
The event, which has cemented itself as a premier fixture on the Ugandan fashion calendar, featured an elite roster including Dyna Vence, Fatumah Asha, Yasmin K, M Pesh, and Viiteaux Couture. Yet, it was Urhobo’s intentional blend of minimalist structure and ethereal textures that left the audience in awe.
The “Afro Dot Collection” is a departure from the predictable “heritage prints” often expected of African designers. Instead, Urhobo delivered a narrative of sophistication, focusing on silhouettes that celebrate the female form with both restraint and drama.
The Ethereal Lace: One of the collection’s anchors is a breathtaking white A-line gown. The piece features intricate floral lace embroidery that cascades from a delicate V-neckline down into a voluminous, floor-sweeping skirt. It evokes a sense of timeless bridal elegance, modernized by its lightness and fluid movement.
The Sculpted Silhouette: Contrastingly, Urhobo displayed his mastery of minimalism with a sleek, sleeveless turtleneck gown in optic white. The garment, devoid of embellishment, relies entirely on its impeccable tailoring, hugging the model’s frame to create a statue-like presence that felt both futuristic and classic.
The Power of Red: The collection reached its crescendo with a vibrant crimson ensemble. This piece, a high-neck, body-consigning gown paired with a dramatic, flowing cape, demanded the room’s attention. The way the fabric trailed behind the model captured the “art school energy” Urhobo is known for, turning the runway into a canvas of motion.
Bright Urhobo, the Creative Director of Ranto Clothings, has quickly become a “case study in intentional growth” within the African luxury sector. Originally from the Urhobo culture of Nigeria, a heritage known for its vivid use of color and distinction, Bright has successfully reinterpreted these traditional sensibilities for a global stage.
Known for his refusal to be “cataloged” by Western eyes, Urhobo’s design philosophy centers on sustainability and craftsmanship. “Culture is not something we hang on a garment as decoration; it is a language we design with,” Urhobo has previously noted. His work at Satis-Fashion 2023 proved that African luxury does not need to shout to be heard; it simply needs to be authentic.
The evening was bolstered by the diversity of Ugandan talent. Fatumah Asha brought her signature glamour, while Dyna Vence showcased why she remains a household name in bespoke elegance. Yasmin K and M Pesh offered fresh perspectives on contemporary wear, and Viiteaux Couture added a layer of avant-garde flair to the proceedings.
