As the reality of our ‘new normal’ starts to take shape, the future of the ‘Fashion Show’ has become a huge topic. Until we have a vaccine for the Coronavirus, it’s possible that we might continue social distancing for another year or so. Where does that leave the ‘fashion show’, one of the most effective marketing campaigns designers have worked with for years?
When quizzed on whether Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards, the most buzzed about fashion show in Kampala, will hold this year, Brian Ahumuza, the founder and curator of the event, hinted on this year’s event happening virtually. “There could be a surprise! We are looking at how things are happening elsewhere in the world, and seeing how we can adapt,” he opined. “What if the Corona pandemic is here with us forever? We are devising ways we can pull off this event without doing it the way we usually do.”
He, however, didn’t confirm if that’s the direction they are taking. “These are uncertain times; we don’t know how long this will take? We don’t know what the government is planning to do as far as easing lock downs is concerned,” he explained. His team together with Talent Africa are still figuring it out and will officially communicate to us on the future of the event that’s considered the biggest night in African fashion.
On whether emerging brands are ready for this new phenomenon of virtual shows owing to their limited tech and other resources, he was optimistic. “Putting together something impactful does not need lots of money, you just need to be creative and also work within your means.”
