Behind the scenes of the making of Busy Signal’s concert outfit

Not many Ugandan designers have gotten the opportunity to have their work worn by international icons but that is very different for budding young  designer Biff Aggrey. His custom made shirt was worn by dance hall singer Busy Signal when he was live in concert here in Kampala.

His story is not your average tale of promoter meets designer to make a fashion statement while stage. For the love and respect for the artiste who was jetting in the country, Biff approached Bush Baby who is station manager of Urban TV with the idea of dressing Busy Signal.

“Bushbaby liked the idea and gave me a go ahead to do it,” he intimates. “I went back to the store and started my creative work right away.

His inspiration for the outfit was peace considering that two countries Jamaica and Uganda are both peaceful and music always unites them. With the incorporation of leather and khaki, he managed to create the unique piece. “I had the Ugandan and the Jamaican colors on the right and left sleeves of the shirt respectively.”

Biff is the designer behind Shuba Fashion House. It’s a new fashion house with a different take on fashion and design. His most memorable moment through out the experience was when he presented his piece to the artiste. “My worry was him not liking the design,” he muses. Busy Signal could not hide his excitement when he saw the outfit. 

The Jamaican born artiste later confirmed that he would indeed wear it. What I can say is that he looked good in the shirt and the concert was a success.

Ugandan designers are slowly taking center stage on the global fashion stage. All we need to do is to support them and wear their designs.
