All of ‘Black Panther’ Star Florence Kasumba’s Best Red Carpet Moments
As we line up to enter theatres and cinemas to watch the highly anticipated movie ‘Black Panther’, here’s an ode to one of the stars in the blockbuster. German Ugandan actress Florence Kasumba portrays Ayo, a bad a** warrior in king T’Challa’s Dora Milaje army. As part of the press tour for the movie, she has had some major red carpet moments.
At the LA premiere of the movie, Kasumba stepped out in a black sequenced fitted design from South African designer, David Tlale. The black lace gown with embroidery accents provided all the drama you’d expect at such an epic premiere.
She went for a sheer Jenny Packham gown at the London premiere. The gown featured a candy-like confetti embellishment, successfully fusing an artsy and whimsical mood with glamorous connotations. She completed the look with a ruby-red lip.
Florence Kasumba was born in Kampala, Uganda, and grew up in Germany. She studied in the Netherlands and speaks three languages fluently – German, English, and Dutch.
Her childhood was spent in Essen, Germany, where she went to elementary school and high school. She also played tenor saxophone in a youth symphonic band. After watching the musical Starlight Express at the age of 12, her path to becoming a performer became clear. She earned her degree in acting, singing, and dancing in Tilburg, the Netherlands. While she was still studying, she landed her first professional film role, Silke, in the Dutch motion picture hit Ik ook van Jou.
After graduating, she performed in many musicals, such as Chicago, The Lion King, Cats, West Side Story, Evita, and Beauty and the Beast. Florence Kasumba traveled to New York City and was cast in the title role in Germany’s premiere production of Elton John’s international hit musical Aida. She also played Lisa in Germany’s premiere cast of Mamma Mia.
During her successful years of stage work, Florence Kasumba was offered a role in Germany’s longest-running crime show, Tatort, in Tod aus Afrika. In the following years, she had roles in films and TV shows like Kongo, ABC’s The Quest, Letzte Spur Berlin, Four Women and a Funeral, NBC’s Emerald City as East, Tatort – Im gelobten Land, DC’s Wonder Woman as Senator Acantha, and Marvel’s Captain America – Civil War as Security Chief.
Her 2018 releases will include: Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as Hippolyta, the Netflix film Mute as Tanya, and the German movie Arthur & Claire as Maitre.
Next to her work as an actress, Florence Kasumba’s passion lies in martial arts, like Tai Chi Chen, Tai Chi Yang, Shaolin Kung Fu and Qi Gong.
