An Ode To Ugandan Style: Two Stylists Explore Culture
The Ibiara Stylist Masterclass culminated in a stunning showcase of Ugandan fashion, featuring the October cover for Satisfashion Ug. The theme, “Culture but make it Couture,” challenged aspiring stylists to reimagine traditional Ugandan elements in a high-fashion context. As we ring in the 62nd Independence Day, this theme was especially welcome.
Hakim Sematimba and Kimberly Joselyn emerged as the standout finalists, each presenting a unique interpretation of the theme. Their designs offered a refreshing departure from the ubiquitous black, yellow, and red flag-heavy approach, delving deeper into the cultural nuances of Uganda.
Hakim Sematimba, a passionate fashion enthusiast, showcased three distinct looks that blended traditional Ugandan elements with contemporary couture. His first ensemble featured a draped bark cloth fabric, a symbol of royalty and authority in Ugandan culture. The intricate folds and textures of the fabric were complemented by a minimalist silhouette, creating a striking and elegant piece.
For his second look, Hakim incorporated cowrie shells, which were braided into the model’s hair, adding a touch of traditional elegance.
Hakim’s third look was inspired by the malwa, a communal drink that holds significant cultural importance in Uganda. The model’s headpiece was designed with traditional pots used for serving malwa, a look he kept beauty focused.
Kimberly Joselyn, a lawyer-turned-creative, also offered a fresh perspective on Ugandan culture. Her first look featured bark cloth from ORM Streetwear, a Ugandan fashion brand. The model was adorned with gold and had a plate of cowrie shells, which were a currency of the yesteryear. This is because “Eat your Money” is a ubiquitous Ugandan experience. The ensemble was styled in a contemporary manner, showcasing Kimberly’s ability to blend tradition with modern aesthetics.
Kimberly’s second look was a Y2K-inspired ensemble featuring a red shirt and edgy accessories. The outfit was paired with a yellow popsicle, a reference to the popular “Cool Cool Bar” in Uganda. While the popsicle was unfortunately left out due to unforeseen circumstances, the look remained an apt representation of the younger generation’s style and edge.
Kimberly’s third look was inspired by the crocheted white chair backs that were once a common sight in Ugandan homes. The skirt’s pattern was reminiscent of these iconic chair backs, while the overall ensemble was vintage-inspired and soft. The model also wore pearls, symbolizing Uganda’s reputation as the “Pearl of Africa.”
Both Hakim and Kimberly demonstrated their talent and creativity in reimagining Ugandan culture through fashion. Their designs showcased the potential for blending tradition with contemporary style, creating a unique and visually stunning aesthetic.
As these young talents continue to grow, it is exciting to anticipate their future contributions to the Ugandan fashion industry. Their participation in the Ibiara Stylist Masterclass highlights the need for more platforms that support aspiring stylists and foster a thriving fashion scene in Uganda.
