Mother's Day

“I Am Grateful to My Mother for Standing By Me and My Siblings Regardless” – Spice Diana

By  |

The typical Ugandan mother might hesitate to support her daughter’s journey as a pop star. However, that could never be said about Ms. Beat Nantale, singer Spice Diana’s mother. Spice Diana’s life took a different turn in 2014 when her debut single ‘Onsanula’ was released. At that time, still a student in high school, she needed all the support in the world, and her mum’s love and encouragement proved invaluable. “From day 1, she supported my talent without any worries. Thanks to her support, I never faced the challenges young girls in the industry often encounter,” she recalls.

True to her words, 10 years later, Spice Diana is one of the most commercially successful Ugandan singers, something her mother can’t help but feel proud of. However, with this success also come countless challenges. Spice Diana swears by her mother’s infinite support. “Sometimes it gets tough, especially with social media. The critique can be overwhelming. But my mom will call me and tell me to be strong. There was a time when someone commented on social media ‘rest in peace’. My mom called and asked, ‘Are you dead?’ It was sad, but we found a way to joke about it and keep going. She’s been a pillar and someone who keeps me strong; she gives me the comfort I need,” she tells Satisfashion UG.

On the invaluable life lessons she has learned from her mother, Spice Diana says, “She always emphasized being humble and respecting people. Welcoming everyone, you don’t really know who is going to help you or put you on the next level, but she is the kind of person who welcomes all.”

Despite her busy schedule, the singer ensures she makes time for her mother. “There is always time for things that matter, and family is key. There’s no way I’d spend a week without checking on my mom or visiting home. I try to go home at least 3-4 times a week,” she says.

Her final message to her mother is that she loves her so much and is grateful to her for standing by her and her siblings regardless of life’s challenges. “To all the mothers out there, thank you for being strong, for being everything! I want to wish you a happy Mother’s Day as we celebrate you all. Keep being the women that you are… nothing can truly explain a mother’s love and what they mean to the world,” she concludes.
