SA Menswear Week (SAMW) AW2022 took place on Dreyer street in Claremont , Cape Town over the weekend.
As the second installment of the year and making a return back to physical runway shows, SAMW featured a combination of menswear and womenswear, making up for the lack of regular fashion weeks in SA as the fashion industry slowly recovers from lockdowns and the pandemic.
Designers and fashion students presented their upcoming Autumn and Winter collections over two days and guests and media were treated to Deetlefs wine.
Established fashion houses such as Habits, Jacques La Grange, Masa Mara, Shana, Ruff Tung and Stefania Morland back on the runway. Here are some of my highlights.
Habits
The fashion house loves a good print and their collection featured Safari appropriate and ready-to-wear pieces. Models strutted the runway in a combination of zebra and leopard prints, as well as leather in relaxed fits of dresses, coats and suits. Some of the outfits were paired with avant garde couture hats by Bettina Thomas millinery

Jacques La Grange Couture
This is a big year for the king of couture as he is celebrating three decades in the fashion industry. Renowned for gorgeous pieces in feminine and romantic shapes elevated with beautiful detailing, Jacques’ collection included electric pink – the hottest colour of the season, as well as gold and black. The collection was paired with cute handmade shoes by Coast and Koi.

Ruff Tung
Bridget Pickering’s first solo showcase included flattering playsuits in sparkly sequins, as well as block and graphic prints. The inclusive brand is loved for its functional clothing that can go from the office to a night on the tow

Masa Mara
One thing about Masa Mara is that they will bring on the theatrics when it comes to presenting a collection, and I do enjoy a designer who puts in a bit more effort when it comes to styling a collection. Models wearing bull horns and balaclavas walked the runway in the athleisure brand’s beautiful signature prints in bold colours.

Stefania Morland
The luxury clothing label showcased a dreamy collection made up of textured and relaxed fits. The designer’s aesthetic is combining natural fibres in a unique way that works beautifully. The designs were paired with shoes by That Shoe Lady.
