Your guide to looking better in photos
I have to admit that I’m not photogenic at all. While I love the camera so much, it just hates me with a passion. That doesn’t mean I’m ugly though. I’m fully convinced that I look better in my mirror at home than I do in photos. It’s always that way. Some people know how to make it work while others don’t. It’s called being photogenic.
You’ve probably met some one who looks obscenely ‘hot‘ in his or her photos on facebook but in real life they look like a duck (no offence)! To beat this I decided to have a little chat with SatisfashionUG’s in house photographer Conrad Roy on how to look good in front of the camera. While this is not a pressing issue, looking at myself in photos always depresses me. I believe there are many of you who are just like me. Many celebrities look horrible on the red carpet and they have done absolutely nothing about it.
According to Conrad, here are some of the few pointers on how to make yourself picture perfect.
1. Understand the balance of light
When you are indoors, first figure out where the light is coming from before you get set. Pose facing where the light is coming from. This is really helpful. Don’t cast yourself directly in the sun, you will look horrible. In the night, always make sure the camera is good. Cameras without a flash light will do you no justice. In that case if documenting the events of your evening is more important than looking good in the photos, you might as well just take your photos (which will be ugly)!
Know the pose that always works for you
2. What skin colour tone do you have?
Many of us are dark. Like really dark! For someone like me, always put light into consideration before you get on set. Don’t take photos in places where the light isn’t balanced. With a lighter skin tone, one can pose from almost anywhere there’s light.
3. What poses make you look good?
You know the features on your body that make people speak in tongues. Always pose in a way that will accentuate them. If you have elaborate curves, flaunt them. Some people look better when they face side ways. If that works for you, stick to it.
For celebrities, looking good is part of the job. Just know that feature that people like about you and flaunt it. Rema is very popular (to the men) because of her enviable beautiful eyes. For someone like her, smize with them. Look directly in the camera and use the eyes to full effect. Fille has great curves, it pains when they are barely seen in her photos!!
4. Know where the camera is.
Standing directly in front of the camera is going to make you look a little shorter than you really are. Make sure the camera is at chest height. If you are seated, try to take shots from above. This works even better for selfies. You can try it with your phone right now and see.
5. Have fun
It’s important to have fun all the time. Photos taken when you are happy will always have life. Don’t get nervous when you see the camera. It can never eat you. Smile, let loose and have fun. This works perfectly.
Taking photos isn’t a must. So if you feel like not doing so, stay away. However with this generation of selfies, facebook, Instagram and twitter, communication is now done using photos. Taking a nice one will do some magic for you. Trust me.
