Designer To Know: Aisha Anyesu of Christie Brown
Aisha Anyesu is one of the most sought after designers in Ghana. Her aesthetic is admired by most but sure can’t be aped. Creative Director, Aisha Anyesu began her love affair with fashion at an early age. However, the real motivation came from watching her grandmother Christie Brown, a seamstress, create rich and vibrant garments. Aisha named her fashion label after her which was founded in March 2008 with the launch of the brands first run way show in Accra.
Today, Christie Brown stands uniquely as a women’s apparel and accessories manufacturer and retailer with pieces ranging from beautiful bespoke gowns to statement pieces suitable for all occasions which are all inspired by the African culture and art. Her clothes and accessories have made bold statements that say:
-Here for a summit but fashion
-Reporting to work on Monday but fashion
-Modest African woman but fashion
From winning the Emerging Designer of the Year Award in 2009 at the Arise Africa Fashion Week in Johannesburg; to being the only Ghanaian label showcased at the Arise LAfrique-A-Porter in Paris Fashion Week in March 2010; to capturing the attention of global stars like Beyonce whose backup dancers she designed costumes for; to the biggest fashion influencers such as Harpers Bazaar, Vogue Italia, Canoe 53 and Glamour Magazine, the brand has a consistent history of international acclaim and recognition.
