Fashion Police On The Prowl: Mary Bata, Barbie Kyagulanyi, Fille, Spice Diana and more
Welcome to Fashion Police, a new column where our cop is on the prowl to apprehend fashion and style offenders. Expect verdicts such as Flop-ish, fly, hot mess and flop.
Hit it!
Vinka
Vinka is proving to be quite the risk taker with her fashion however, this risk doesn’t pay off very well. While all the pieces are classic and are set to reflect the funky 70’s, they do not necessarily work well together; the belt makes the shorts look like pyjama bottoms, the socks should have had more colour to really pop, the shoes should have had fun elements (stones, dots, color), so they could be a statement other than just a glove for the feet. The top and bra beneath it make my eyes sore! Black could have been a safer colour for the bra, better still, something funkier than this breastfeeding bra I see. The look spells “prison bae” and that’s not a good look for anyone.
Verdict: FLOP-ISH
4/10
Barbie Kyagulanyi
Barbie Kyagulanyi in this Beryl Qouture dress is the perfect example of chic! She wore the piece for a presentation and, wow she is gorgeous. The dress perfectly captures youth and sophistication of the urban woman. The combination of nude shades with Orange creates an aura of Fresh Enthusiasm, the tailoring of the garment was neat and well executed and Barbie did well to add subtle accessories to compliment the dress.
Verdict; FLY
10/10
Daniella Mayanja
Daniella’s body artwork for the pregnancy shoot has sparked mixed feelings in me. While I find it incredibly beautiful, I don’t see why this intimately private photograph had to make its way to our eyes. That aside, the Body Paint Queen (who did this artwork) gets full props from me. It was exquisite in every way.
Verdict: FLY-ISH
7/10
Ronald Waiswa
Ronnie definitely has the body to pull off this lace shirt. I know there are even others out there wishing it was lighter. A bold move, yet executed flawlessly in all white. The shoes though leave a lot to be desired, a cuter pair of moccasins or loafers could have done wonderful things to this outfit.
Verdict; FLY-ISH
8/10
Spice Diana
Spice Diana’s fur is an epic fail for me. It reminds me of Amanda Riley’s nude pics on Instagram. This shot had all the potential of being high fashion but because of the lighting, body language; posture, positioning, posing and facial expression it has salaciousness written all over it. So it comes off very cheesy. The ‘hooker’ earrings nail it further into the pit.
Verdict; HOT MESS
2/10
Diana Nalubega
The cut of this sequin gown is what gives it the extra edge to dazzle and look like million dollars. The slit was a turd bit in the high area. The shoes though were underwhelming, to say the least, and when coupled with the holler-hoop earrings, they almost put a ghetto twist to this look; which is never a good thing. No one wants to look ratchet.
VERDICT; FLY-ISH
6/10
BBS TV presenters
These two represent what it means to “try too hard”. There are so many elements to the looks which makes them tacky.
The lady in blue has a lace bodice with a beaded necklace, wrong choice! Lace is a stand-alone fabric that never ever EVER requires accessorizing because its bold on its own. Leaving out the necklace could have been a classier move. The peplum combined with the see-through skirt was a disaster of biblical proportions. This outfit is so confusing it should be reserved for a gipsy witch, not a pretty lady like this.
The all-black outfit reminds me of a church girl that wears her little black dress beneath a choir robe to seduce the men in the pews. The lighter overlay doesn’t blend in well with the outfit (looks like a rode thrown over) and I have no kind words for the court shoes; they are just out of place. This was a disaster in all its forms.
VERDICT; FLOP
3/10
Fille
The top, pants and denim blazer had the makings of a chic look written all over them. The pair of sunglasses breathed youth all over the attire, for a tiny God-sent moment, Fille looked cute. Then a pair of fishnets crawled from beneath her pants and this look became trashy. And what’s with the red heels? Who exactly advised Fille to wear this? A nice pair of sneakers or wedge Allstar sneakers would have done the trick.
VERDICT; FLOP-ISH
5/10
Anita Fabiola
Now, this is how you wear a camouflage. Anita Fabiola did the armed a service by wearing the look right; folded arms, well cut damages, the boots are to die for (enough flare but not too flamboyant) and the hair & makeup allow her just enough criminal swag to sell this outfit.
VERDICT; FLY
10/10
Mary Bata
Mary Bata needs new friends….and a stylist! The aim was to create a high-fashion dramatic constructed dress, this was a miserable fail. This look died more deaths than the biblical Egyptians that attempted to cross the Red Sea. The cut was terrible; it’s like as though naughty Nunu from Teletubies ate part of it. The fitting at the bust area, shoulders and arms indicate that this look is far from comfortable. That coupled with several layers of disagreeable curtain-like fabric around her body and the vague attempt to salvage the look with a train was deplorable. I shall hold my peace about those accessories and hair.
VERDICT; FLOP
2/10
