Loosely translated as “on-the-right-track”, Mulamwa is a testimony that Vibration Music artiste Toniks is still one of the coolest Ugandan artistes there is. Mulamwa is a pulsating song enhanced with heart stomping African drumbeats. A perfect song to wind down the energy. The video attempts to capture the gaiety urban party life characterised by youthful blood and exaggerated display of imagination. The directors settled for a washed-out colour theme perhaps to depict the late evening atmosphere. While this kept the pop of colour out of sight, it is still the most enthralling thing about this video.
Two voluptuous girls one clad in leopard print underwear and another in a black peplum dress strut onto the scene as Toniks and his friends gaze away in admiration. The girls are every bit sexy in both the way they carry themselves and ‘the way they oscillate’ just like Toniks reiterates in the song. The lingerie clad girl wears a light green jumper on her waist. This accentuates her crop top which is a striped one. She is definitely not walking to church!
Toniks is the coolest living thing in this video. His ragged hair, plaid short sleeved shirt, denim shorts and timberland boots was a genius combination. He puffs a cigar with his friends as they cruise away in vintage Mercedez Benz. The choice of car worked perfectly well with the black and white theme of the video.
With the background and mood of the video in play, I still feel like this video draws a lot of influence from Chris Brown’s Loyal video script. Do you see this too? Timberland boots, the bike, snap backs and the whole plaid thing going on in his waist remind me of the Loyal video. I still like the way he pulled this off effortlessly. However the boots limit his mobility which betrays the local party scene. There is no much movement save for a video vixen rocking the hoola-hoop and a few scenes of vixens gravitating.
The not-eye-friendly gothic night scene turns Toniks into a Chris Brown wannabe. He is dressed in an over-size plaid long sleeved shirt and black baggy pants. The shirt is loosely buttoned giving him a rugged look of a street hip hop star. There are positives to pick from the video. Of course I’m team fitting clothes, so he lost some marks here.
The presence of boys playing cards and trying to outwit Chris Brown at his own girl. Well, its natural instinct to copy. Oli ku mulamwa! Yes Toniks oli ku mulama – ON POINT!!
