12 Men’s Style Rules You Need to Break
Yes, rules are made to be broken. That’s why you need to break these style rules.
- Never wear black and navy or black and brown in the same outfit
In the past, the style law abiders used to walk around preaching that these colors are so similar and the difference between them is so small that wearing them in the same outfit will make you look dull. Although these are dark neutral colors, they actually combine very well and I recommend you try this look.
2. Denim on denim
Denim on denim was considered the country man’s work outfit and therefore a lot of people stayed away from it for fear of being referred to as farm laborers. All you need to do to make this outfit look stylish is make sure the shades of denim are different.
- Never button up your top most button unless you have a tie
Although I grew up hearing this rule all the time, I think it is completely useless. However, I still believe that showing a little bit of man cleavage is considered sexy.
- Always wear a belt
Did you know that suit pants are not supposed to be worn with belts? Well, now that you know it’s time you start experimenting.
- Match your leather
A lot of men think they need to match the color and leather of their watch, belt and shoes every time they walk out. I think this rule is very burdensome and expensive to follow. It also makes your outfit look so dull with little contrast.
- Never wear gym clothes outside the gym
Traditionally speaking, sweatpants were only meant to be worn at the gym and I remember watching lots of YouTube style videos that shamed men for wearing gym clothes outside the gym. However, of late athleisure has become a popular trend in fashion so this rule no longer applies in the fashion world.
- Never wear more than 3 colors at the same time
This rule is not completely useless. If you are new to fashion, this rule helps you to play it safe. However, if you’re a style pro then you definitely need to break this rule and experiment with as many colors as you want.
- Only wear dark colored clothes in the cold and wear bright colors in warm weather
The idea behind this rule is that dark colors make you feel warmer and therefore should never be worn in hot weather and brighter colors make you feel cooler and should therefore be worn in warm weather. However, what you really need to worry about is the fabric. Avoid thick fabrics in warm weather or lighter fabrics in cold weather. So you can wear dark colors in warm weather as long as the fabric is light and breathable.
- Always match the color of your socks with your pants
This is a style rule I’m sure our fathers live by. Matching your socks with your pants makes your outfit seem so dull and plain. You need to add color and contrast to your socks in order to look like you dressed with intent in the morning. However, you need to stay away from very playful socks with bold images of cartoons or patterns on them because they make you look childish.
- Never wear dress shoes with casual pants
Although Oxfords, Derby’s, Brogues and Chelsea boots were traditionally meant to be worn as formal shoes, they are increasingly being worn with jeans these days and they look neat.
- Never tuck in your t-shirt
A lot of men think t-shirts should never be tucked in and that if you tuck in a t-shirt you risk looking like your mother dressed you up. But this is a very stylish and neat thing you should do.
- Always match your pocket square with your tie.
Matching your tie and pocket square is a really nice way to make your outfit look plain boring. However, you still need to make sure the colors complement each other.
