Being lockdown couldn’t stop Hannington and Jeanne-Marie Buule from formalizing their union. As per the guidelines from the government, they were united in holy matrimony on 29th April at All Saints Cathedral, in what we now we refer to as a ‘scientific wedding’.
Meeting
(Blushes) we met at Pendeza beauty spot, my beauty shop. Hannington, who is the CEO at Othoflex, was delivering some orthopedic items to my Aunt. He told me that he was attracted to the diamond before him. I was smitten immediately.
The engagement
On 28th January he called and asked if I was at the shop, I told him I was.
Next thing a friend of mine walks in and tries to purchase some products. However, he wasn’t being decisive on what he wanted. Little did I know thay he was the designated photographer Hannington had invited to document the event.
Shortly after my Smart Mister walks in looking rather too excited. I offered him a seat which he rejected and opted to go down on one knee. I thought he was acting his own ka movie. It took me a couple of minutes to notice he was serious.
I was so overwhelmed because I didn’t expect it but it was what I wanted (I had mentioned to him before that I wanted a low key kinda engagement instead of throwing a party full of people I might not know even and spend a lot of money just to ask me to marry him)
Watch their tear inducing proposal here
(Such a genius! We hope it was intimate enough)
Salon
Due to restricted movement, we killed two birds with one stone. A very close family friend basically was my hairstylist. She also played the role of my maid of honor (witness). My nails were done by a mobile manicurist at my Aunt’s place. We tried to do nails having my bouquet as inspiration.
I did my makeup. (You’re kidding?). I am a low key makeup artist and I have done several looks on different brides and on myself as well. I however wanted to be a natural princess. As impossible as people think it is, I got up early before my Kasuze Katya to do my makeup which was the trickiest part of the day. Once I was done the rest was a walk over. I didn’t have any inspiration. I knew exactly what I wanted.
(I’m taking YouTube classes asap)
The Outfits
I wanted to be a princess. My daddy’s and my husband’s. So a ballroom gown made a perfect Choice. The veil, I always wanted to sweep half the aisle with my veil (little girl dreams). So a cathedral veil came in handy. The veil was white while the gown was off-white because it was the only available option. But it wasn’t too off. My gown, veil and crown were from Bridal Paradise. I have always dreamt of a cathedral veil and a ballroom gown, not even the pandemic could stop me from making it come true.
Hannington is always in suits because of work, he wanted to look different for our wedding.
The groom is always in suits so he wanted to be different. He is a pan Africanist so the kaftan suit was the perfect choice for him. I think he had a saloon visit. He looked fresh.
Did you plan to have this scientific wedding?
It wasn’t the plan initially. What woke us up was how the budget made sense. But most importantly, we wanted to get united in holy matrimony. We could have waited but also we weren’t sure about the state of the economy after the pandemic. So why not use the little ‘ka money’ we have to plan a small event to avoid taking any debt and scratching people’s pockets. What is marriage? A union of two people before God in holy matrimony. Right? The important witnesses; our parents and siblings, were available. They blessed and gave us a go ahead to do this. So we went ahead. The rest shall follow after the lockdown is eased.
The Budget
The budget was friendly but of course with help from friends and family who sent in their support, gifts, pledges, prayers and well wishes.
Reception
We held a small one of about 15 guests at Pearl of Africa Hotel.
