Why Ugandans definitely have to fuss about the royal baby?

By  |

The media is awash with the news of the British royal baby. It’s nothing we’ve seen before and not anywhere in the world. This bundle of joy is having everyone around the world talking like we depend on it. It’s a different story here in Kampala. One person asked why Ugandans cannot get a life. “It’s like we don’t have royals here, ” she added. I took time to give her comments some more thought. Do we really love our royal babies enough to fuss about them too? Do we even have royals?

We all have to agree on one thing. There ‘s nothing to write home about our own royalty. When Kate Middleton and Prince William tied the knot, it was a movie. Kate wore a custom made wedding gown designed by British designer Sarah Burton. Sarah is creative director at Alexander McQueen. I do not know if our own royal wedding gowns were designs by our own Ugandan designers. We’ve had a couple of royal weddings and none of our Ugandan designers has gotten credit for designing a dress.

Kate went on deliver her baby boy from St Mary’s Hospital, a British hospital. The new parents emerged out of the hospital and presented their new bundle of joy to the world. Our royals prefer having their babies in foreign hospitals. Something that probably signals that maybe Ugandan hospitals do not have proper equipment to handle royals.

In line with royal tradition, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stepped out of the hospital doors to the wild cheers of the crowd gathered outside and posed for photographs. Like his father did before him, William took his son from Kate and held him while addressing the crowd. The Duchess seemed to have paid tribute to the late Princess Diana when she chose a polka-dot dress designed by British designer Jenny Packham.

Going back to the twitter rants. Ugandans definitely have to fuss about the #Royalbaby simply because there is totally nothing to fuss about at home. No attention to royalty and no culture or norms.
