The end of the road for Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton

By  |

After an illustrious 16-year tenure, Marc Jacobs is leaving Louis Vuitton. Jacobs, buisness partner Robert Duffy, and LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault confirmed that the designer is indeed on the outs at the French fashion house. Jacobs makes his exit from Vuitton to focus on building up his namesake, readying Marc Jacobs (the brand) for a public offering.

Marc showed his last collection for Vuitton this morning in Paris, with still no word on who will replace him. WWD has been speculating that former Balenciaga creative director Nicolas Ghesquière may be the pick, although nothing has been confirmed.

Jacobs is credited with transforming Louis Vuitton from a dusty leather goods brand to one of the most coveted labels in the world. His directional designs and collaborations with artists like Takashi Murakami, Steven Sprouse, and Yayoi Kusama helped increase the house’s popularity over the years. These days, you can’t go anywhere without seeing that famed monogram print. No doubt, Jacobs’s triumphant time at Vuitton will be remembered as a high point in the label’s history. He will be missed, but after 16 years, change doesn’t seem like such a bad idea.
