The arrival of a New Year means new fashion shows to look forward to! There are many fashion events worth knowing about that celebrate African designers in a big way. Note these down in your diary so you can get your fashion fix.

Kampala Fashion Week

Known as Uganda’s most influential fashion platform, the Kampala Fashion Week will take place from the 27th to the 29th of September 2018. Its aim is to promote both established and emerging Ugandan designers around the continent presenting them to a global market.

At Kampala Fashion Week of 2017, SEED Show winner Say-Manda was not only given the opportunity to debut his first collection, he opened the runway shows for the entire event. This is one of the ways Kampala Fashion Week is giving young and talented designers opportunities to showcase their craft.

Abryanz Style And Fashion Awards

This annual event held in Kampala awards excellent personalities and brands that are making waves in the fashion and style industry throughout Africa. It’s a highly glamorous event that’s usually held in early December.

Last year, there was royalty in the air as Nabagerekka of Buganda, Sylvia Nagginda attended the event. There was also an increase in the number of award categories, with 34 instead of 25 from the previous year. The event is the perfect chance to see celebrities strut their style on the red carpet.

Pearl Of Africa Fashion Awards

The Pearl Of Africa Fashion Awards acknowledges people who have done amazing work in the fashion industry. Since Uganda’s fashion industry is growing when it comes to fashion houses as well as fashion icons who work hard at their craft, this is the event to take notice of their brilliant work.

How the awards work is that people are welcome to nominate individuals in various categories, such as Best Fashionable Businessman, Best Fashion Icon, Best Makeup Artist, Best Fashionable Couple, and Best Fashion House, to mention a few. There are even awards for fashion bloggers, so if you’re making waves with your fashion blog this could be your time to shine – just don’t forget to host your own event to celebrate yourself and your fashion dreams.

Africa Fashion Week (AFWL)

Since 2011, AFWL has hosted six catwalk events and showcased 850 emerging designers from Africa, America, and Europe, to approximately 75000 visitors. These shows are a great opportunity for designers as the visitors consist of retailers, buyers, and industry professionals.Last year the AFWL was held in London at the Freemasons’ Hall on the 11th and 12th of August. Check out the AFWL website to stay up to date on news regarding this year’s event.

Swahili Fashion Week

This is the largest annual fashion event in East and Central Africa, with the aim of promoting Eastern fashion brands as well as improve the quality of fashion design in the region. Established in 2008, Swahili Fashion Week celebrates and awards various people in the fashion industry, such as models, bloggers, designers from East Africa and Africa in general, and style icons, to mention a few. Last year the Swahili Fashion Week was held between the 1st and 3rd of December in Dar Es Salaam. This year it’s scheduled to be held in December, but the dates are as yet unconfirmed.

This year is shaping up to be an exciting one when it comes to fashion. The above events are sure to celebrate new and current designers in Uganda and throughout Africa while helping you stay on top of the best fashion trends so you can be the star of your own show.
